Need 26.75 – Domestic Violence Victim Transitioning From Safe House
We alert you today to a single mother of a teenage boy (13) who is transitioning from a domestic violence safe house to her own apartment. She was working on what she thought was a solid plan. She moved halfway across the country with her son and secured employment earning $20 per hour for 40 hours per week. Her plan relied on her caseworker at the shelter to apply for an apartment for her, as she had a $1,500 housing stipend. The caseworker apparently didn’t apply for her, then went out of work for two weeks and won’t be back until the 9th. The issue is that the single mother is working full-time while paying for a weekly motel in a city where she has no family support or friends. She doesn’t have the money for the deposit and cannot wait or really count on her caseworker to come through on the deposit plan. Her monthly pay should be around $3,200, and her rent will be $1,299/month. She should be sustainable once she secures the apartment. We want to help her secure the apartment by paying the $1,500 deposit and providing $600 in additional support for the motel and food.
