We Can’t Save Christmas.
On November 1st at 8:30 in the morning I was asked for the first time this year to “save Christmas” for a single mother and her young child. Holloween was over and the holiday season had begun. It is during this time of year that I get a tremendous amount of inquiries about “saving Christmas” for families in need. We get equally the same amount of inquiries from families that want “Christmas saved” for their children.
I am not going to get into what we should be doing or not doing for people in need this time of year. (For the record though I am for helping people in need every day of the year) I am also not going to engage in Santa bashing. (Cause I like Ole Saint Nick) What I do what to do is tell you that you can not save Christmas. Christmas was mission launch of sorts to save you. Let’s check out what the apostle Paul wrote about Christmas.
Let’s check out what the apostle Paul wrote about Christmas.
Philippians 2:1-11
1.) So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2.) complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3.)Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4.) Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5.) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6.) who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7.) but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8.) And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9.) Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10.) so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11.)and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
This holiday season I pray that we all have a right view of what Christmas is all about. Christmas is about God saving us, not us saving Christmas. I pray that the message of Christ accompanies any acts of kindness we are led to do. That with every gift given and every person fed that we share the gospel as we represent The Kingdom of God with our lives.
In Christ,
Rodney McClure
