A God Shaped Void.

A God Shaped Void.

“What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace?

This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself”

– Blaise Pascal

The general concept of Pascal’s thought here is that there is a “God Shaped Hole” in the heart of everyone. We all must examine our hearts and make sure that we are not stuffing our fleshly desires and the things of this world into the space that God desires to occupy in our lives.

Honest questions we should ask ourselves:

Do I feel a void in my life? Do I wonder why things leave me feeling empty? Do I ever wonder why it is “never enough”? Not enough money…not good enough spouse… not nice enough car or house…not enough friends…not enough fun? Although I keep cramming everything in, why do I still feel empty?

God Loves you and wants to fill that void in your life… That “God Shaped Hole”

Check out these scriptures:

1 Timothy 2:1-4 –  First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

2 Peter 3:9 –The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Roman 10:11-13 – For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THELORD WILL BE SAVED.”

Being a Christian is not about just “behaving better”. It is about allowing God to come into our lives, realizing our position in relation to God, repenting and laying down our lives for Him. It is about allowing God to fill the “hole” inside us. If you see a Christ follower and wonder why they seem to behave a little differently than the world, it is partly because they are not running around trying to fill this “God Shaped Hole”. God has filled it for them and they have found rest in accepting it.

Ephesians 2:1-10 – And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

I pray that you have allowed God to filling that hole and that you are resting in him.

In Christ,

Rodney McClure, Chief Deeder
