Good Afternoon.

We alert you today of a grandmother that is caring for her three children and 6 month old grandchild. She is a Cuban refugee and works as a housekeeper for an apartment company we work with often. She has a mentally disabled 19 year old son, a sixteen year old daughter that just gave birth six months ago to a baby girl, and a 7 year old boy. She supports all of them on a housekeeper’s pay. She does not receive any government benefits and has held her employment with the apartment company for 18 months. She did not reach out to us for this need. A fellow Deeder that works with her at the apartment community saw her need and submitted it on her behalf.

Prior to her employment with this company she was unemployed for a lengthy period of time. The financial struggles that this unemployment caused were severe. She was unable to pay her gas bill in 2013 and the bill accumulated an insurmountable debt. Her gas was disconnected 2 years ago and she owed $1,385.67 to get it tuned back on. We have worked with the collection agency on this account and they have agreed to reduce the amount owed to $969.97 if paid in full. She has gone without heat for two winters because of this debt. We do not want to see her without heat again this winter as they now have a new baby in the home.
