Need 23.61 – Single Mother Of Special Needs Child Facing Eviction

We alert you today to a 30-year-old single mother of a special needs son (11) facing eviction. Her son has cerebral palsy and has undergone two major surgeries this year. In late February, doctors placed a feeding tube in him so his mother could feed him formula to gain weight. Then in March, he had dual-hip replacement surgery to redo previous unsuccessful hip replacements from 2017. All of this took the mother out of work for almost three months. She received a little income from her employer through FLMA. However, it was not enough to cover their monthly bills, and she fell three months behind on the rent.

She is now facing eviction, and the landlord is asking for the rent plus the late fees and eviction fees totaling well over $7,000. She is back to working full-time in customer service and has also picked up another full-time position as a caregiver. Even though she is working two full-time jobs, she cannot realistically save her apartment. She has secured a new place to live, and moving in will cost $4,308. She has $2,000 in savings, but if she applies all of that money to this move, she will be short on other expenses through the end of the month. We would like to help secure the new apartment by giving her $4,000. This will allow her to preserve a minimal safety net as they make this housing transition.
