Need Status Update: Need Alert 14.20 = Met!

The following need alert went out yesterday morning…

RESULT: You, the Deeders, raised $1,612 in one day!  We are going to pay off her title loan later this week!  Because she is already being supported by a women’s group from a local church we will provide the resource to them to enable them to deliver the relief directly.

Cancer Stricken Widow in Need of Car Title Loan Paid Off – Need 14.20

A Ladies Ministry has made us aware of this morning’s Need Alert.
We come to you with a 62 year old widow. She is homeless, and is about to move into a church for temporary housing.

She was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 Malignant Neoplasma of the Rectum, and is beginning both radiation and chemotherapy treatments this week.

She is the mother of 4 children, all of whom live in California, and the grandmother of six.  She has some siblings in New York but from conversations with her, we believe that they are not in a position to help her out either financially or emotionally.

She does have an 18 year old granddaughter who wants to come and stay with her and help her in her medical situation, but they are having trouble coming up with bus fare for this to happen.  The granddaughter would stay with her at the church temporarily.

So here is the need summary:

Her late husband took out a title loan on her vehicle.  The principal balance of this loan (as of 3/19/14) is $1,348.14 with fees that elevate it to $1,516.66.

According to the paperwork that Nancy shared with us, she is currently paying $200 each month, of which slightly less than $30 goes towards the principal, and over $170 goes towards “fees and charges.”

Essentially, Nancy will never pay this loan off.  She showed us some receipts where only 11¢ went towards principal.  She did not realize this was the case.  We explained the statement to her, and she was distressed to learn that so little of the principal was being paid off.

Nancy’s only source of income is a Social Security benefit of $674 per month.  She has a Car Insurance payment of $125 per month, a storage unit (with what little belongings she has retained) that costs her $112 per month, a phone bill of approximately $30 per month, and this title loan that she pays $200 per month on.

That leaves only $207 for medication, gas, clothes and personal hygiene items.  Nancy does receive food stamps.

Obviously we are going to work on the other bills she has, but think we need to start with the title loan as it is killing her financially.

We believe that if the Deeders could somehow pay off her title loan, it would be an immense help to her in the long term.

Remember, our goal is to Alert you of Needs that, if met, will have a positive impact on the person receiving the assistance.  We feel like the first thing to be addressed with this woman is this horrific title loan.
